Beyond the Application - Building Relationships

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the CRC Regional Convening. In Colorado, we’re lucky—few states offer grant writers the chance to connect directly, face-to-face, with the state’s largest foundations in such an intentional and meaningful way.

The fact that these philanthropic leaders step away from their offices to engage with community partners is no small task. It’s not just about current grant cycles—it’s about building long-term relationships, aligning missions, and fostering open and honest conversations. That kind of generosity, time, and presence speak volumes.

What stood out most? Funders were truly listening. They asked thoughtful questions, showed a genuine interest in what’s happening at the local level, and shared insights into how their organizations are thinking about the future. Many are already planning their giving for 2026 and beyond. Some won’t open applications this year at all. As competition increases and expectations rise, staying focused, transparent, and persistent will be more critical than ever.

This experience reinforced what I’ve always believed: our work isn’t just about submitting applications—it’s about showing up, staying connected, and building relationships that strengthen the entire state. Thank you to the Community Resource Center for hosting. June 2025
